‘Dollface’: Michelle Nader Set As Showrunner Of Season 2 Of Hulu’s Kat Dennings Comedy
Dollface Press Articles Projects

EXCLUSIVE: Michelle Nader has boarded Dollface, the Hulu comedy starring Kat Dennings, as showrunner for its second season.

Nader, who was showrunner and exec producer of Dennings’ CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls, replaces Ira Ungerleider, who was showrunner for season one.

The half-hour show is set to start production this summer after a long, Covid-impacted delay on filming with new episodes set to air in 2022.

The streamer said that Dollface was one of its “best performing new binge series for subscriber engagement” after it launched in November 2019 and was renewed in January 2020.

Dollface follows Jules, played Kat Dennings, a young vibrant woman who is dealing with the aftermath of being dumped by her boyfriend. With a broken heart, Jules battles her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women, with friendships she left behind and the new battle of dating post breakup.

Brenda Song, Shay Mitchell and Esther Povitsky also star.

The series was created by Jordan Weiss, who serves as an executive producer alongside Nader, Margot Robbie, Brett Hedblom and Tom Ackerley for LuckyChap Entertainment, Bryan Unkeless and Scott Morgan for Screen Arcade, Kat Dennings and Nicole King. Dollface is produced by ABC Signature Studios, part of Disney Television Studios.

Nader previously spent a decade under an overall deal at Warner Bros. Television, where in addition to showrunning 2 Broke Girls, she developed female-driven comedy pilots such as I Mom So Hard and an Iliza Schleshinger project at CBS, as well as a Quinta Brunson collaboration at HBO Max.

Previously, she created the U.S. adaptation of Kath & Kim starring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair for NBC while under a deal at Universal, and other past credits also include King of Queens, Spin City, and Dharma and Greg. She most recently worked on the CBS series B-Positive, produced by Chuck Lorre, and she currently has a pilot in development at Fox.

“I only run shows that Kat Dennings stars in – I think that’s a smart plan. She is incredible.” said Nader. “And Jordan has an amazing and distinct voice. She created a really unique world with such a fresh perspective, and I feel lucky to get to write for all these women. And an imaginary Cat Lady.”

“I feel incredibly lucky to have Michelle as a mentor and a partner this season,” said Weiss. “The way she writes women is thoughtful, hilarious, and real, and the way she runs a show follows suit. I’m so excited to work with her, Kat, Margot, and the rest of our Hulu/ABC team to bring another season of this show to life.”

“We are so lucky to have Michelle Nader running this show. I’ve seen her mastery and commitment firsthand and I can’t wait to be on a set with her again” said Kat Dennings. “She is the ideal person to take Dollface to new heights.”

Nader is represented by ICM Partners and Ken Richman at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman. Weiss is represented by UTA, Mosaic and attorney Patti Felker. Dennings is represented by UTA, Linden Entertainment, and attorney Harris Hartman.

Dollface: Hulu Has A Plan To Bring It Back For Season 2 Despite Covid Delays
Press Articles

Dollface will be returning for a second season despite production delays caused by the Covid pandemic.

The Kat Dennings-fronted comedy launched in November 2019 and the streamer called it one of its “best performing new binge series for subscriber engagement” at the time. It was renewed for a second season in January 2020.

However, there had been concern that Dollface might be the latest scripted series to have it renewal reversed due to Covid.

Craig Erwich, President of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, assures Deadline that this is not the case and said “we have a plan to bring it back”.

“That was a show that was impacted by Covid, it was one of the top shows we launched in [2019] and I’m excited to have it come back for season 2,” he added.

The series was created by Jordan Weiss, who served as an executive producer alongside showrunner Ira Ungerleider, Margot Robbie, Brett Hedblom and Tom Ackerley for LuckyChap Entertainment, Bryan Unkeless and Scott Morgan for Screen Arcade, Kat Dennings, Nicole King and Stephanie Laing. Dollface is produced by ABC Signature Studios, part of Disney Television Studios.

Kat Dennings’ Three-Stone Engagement Ring Is A Stunner
Press Articles

Love is in the air. In the last 10 days alone, three celebrities have announced their engagements, starting with Tallulah Willis last Tuesday, followed by Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Williams and former Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe this week. But the engagement streak isn’t over yet: Wandavision actress Kat Dennings, too, is heading down the aisle.

On Thursday, Dennings posted a slideshow on her Instagram with the lead image showing her and musician Andrew Wilkes-Krier holding hands. A three-stone diamond ring gleamed on her ring finger. The caption read, “Don’t mind if I do.” Also included in the slideshow was a photo of the couple kissing and another of Dennings showing off her new piece of jewelry. Wilkes-Krier posted the same slideshow to his own Instagram account, with an engagement ring emoji for a caption.

According to Mike Fried, the CEO of diamond consulting firm The Diamond Pro, Denning’s three-stone ring includes a center emerald-cut diamond that he estimates to be around 4 carats, as well as two trapezoid side stones that help showcase the center stone. “While many celebrity rings we’ve seen in 2021 are solitaires or halos,” says Fried, “[Wilkes-Krier] opted for a personal touch by designing it with side stones.”

Though correct about solitaire-style rings spiking this year — Willis, Williams, and Bristowe all received solitaire engagement rings — three-stone rings are far from unheard of. The Duchess of Sussex wears one, composed of two diamonds from Princess Diana’s collection and one from a trip that she and Prince Harry took to Botswana. And if we had to pick anyone to wear twin diamonds with, Meghan Markle would be at the top of the list.

Kat Dennings Is Engaged! Actress Shows Off Her Diamond Ring from Fiancé Andrew W.K.
Press Articles

Kat Dennings is a bride-to-be.

On Thursday, the actress, 34, announced her engagement to singer Andrew W.K., 42, after confirming their relationship on social media over a week prior.

“Don’t mind if I do,” Dennings captioned her engagement post on Instagram, along with three photos of the couple, two of which showed off her massive diamond ring.

Her fiancé shared the same three photos on his Instagram page, simply captioning his post with the diamond ring emoji.

Four days before announcing her engagement, Dennings wished the musician a happy birthday by posting a photo of the couple kissing.

On May 3, Dennings made their romance Instagram official when she shared two sultry photos of the rocker on Instagram using a heart emoji.

Dennings previously dated musician Josh Groban after they were introduced to each other by 2 Broke Girls star Beth Behrs. But they ultimately called it quits in 2016 after two years together.

Meanwhile, W.K. was married to Cherie Lily — whom Dennings follows on Instagram — in 2008. W.K. and Lily “began amicable divorce proceedings in late 2019,” a previous press release from W.K. confirmed.

Andrew W.K. and Kat Dennings May Be a Love Connection Years in the Making
Press Articles

Despite the recent spate of high-profile relationships coming to an end, from J-Rod to Bill and Melinda Gates, there’s still one set of stars committed to proving that love isn’t dead—Kat Dennings and Andrew W.K.

The unexpected pair appeared to confirm their relationship on Sunday when both posted the same selfie to their Instagram accounts. The shot shows the rock star—synonymous with all-white outfits and a passion of partying—kissing Dennings gently on the forehead as she pouts her lips at the camera. W.K. also posted a photo of them kissing on the mouth to his Instagram Stories, and, two days prior, the actress shared two photos of the musician leaning casually against a black pole captioned with a simple black heart emoji.

Dennings previously dated Josh Groban after they were introduced by her 2 Broke Girls co-star Beth Behrs. But in 2016, after two years together, the couple decided to end their relationship. W.K. married fellow musician Cherie Lily in 2008 and it remains unclear when they actually separated, but he last posted a photo of Lily promoting his merch on Instagram in December 2018.

While this new relationship might seem like it’s coming out of left field, Dennings actually dropped a clue about her new boyfriend on Twitter a month ago. At the beginning of April, the actress tweeted out a screenshot of W.K. pretending to be a Fox News weather man walking past a map of the midwest that just says “PARTY” over and over again. She wrote alongside the image, “me on my vaccinated walks,” to which the rocker replied with a red heart emoji. And it seems this love connection might have actually been years in the making as, back in 2014, Dennings made her interest in W.K. crystal clear, replying to a photo he tweeted of himself, “You are a tall drink of milk AWK.” But this new couple does already have one serious hurdle they’re going to have to overcome, as that same year the actress also tweeted, “White pants are dumb.”

WandaVision Producer Mary Livanos Addresses Lack of Darcy in Series Finale
Press Articles

WandaVision came to an end last week and while it wrapped up pretty perfectly, there are still a few unanswered questions. One surprising thing about the finale was that it barely featured Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis. The character, who returned for the first time since Thor: The Dark World in 2013, played a major role in the series but was only seen briefly t-boning Director Hayward (Josh Stamberg) with her car and declaring, “Have fun in prison!” While this was a perfect Darcy moment, many have wondered why she was not in more of the episode. During a recent interview with TV Line, producer Mary Livanos revealed it wasn’t due to COVID reshoots.

“I don’t think [Dennings’ absence] had to do with anything COVID-related,” Livanos shared. “We love Darcy as this elusive, wacky character, and I find it particularly delightful that Darcy could pop up anywhere in the universe.”

While that doesn’t explain why she wasn’t in more of the finale, it does give us hope that she will be pop up again in the future. Dennings recently shared with the Keep It podcast that her role in Thor was originally supposed to be a couple of scenes, but her friendship with Portman inspired a bigger part.

“Because Natalie and I are already friends, I remember this exactly,” Dennings shared. “I walk in the room and I’m very shy. I came in and I sat down and Natalie hadn’t gotten there yet and everyone was so nice. Natalie came in and sat on my lap because we’re friends. I think our friendship started to infect them [like] its purity and love. Slowly, Darcy became more involved, and I was like, ‘Why are they adding me to scenes?'” She added, “If I am being honest, friendship magic is the reason I’m here today.”

What Actress Kat Dennings Can’t Live Without
Media Press Articles

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hairspray and the electric toothbrush. We asked actress Kat Dennings — a star of WandaVision, which is now streaming on Disney+ — about the eyeliner, vegetable knife, and vinyl record she can’t live without.

Thayers Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel Facial Toner with Rose Petal – $11

I got my first bottle of this toner at the drugstore when I was about 13. I remember seeing something on the back of the bottle that said the lady who invented it always looked ten years younger than her age — such a big claim! I remember thinking, What is it going to do, make me look 3? But it’s a really good toner and not expensive. My skin is really delicate and this has never failed me. I also have an intense scent memory around it, like it’s kind of a mood-booster for me at this point. It’s very refreshing and the scent of it is just so delicious that I’ve basically been hooked for my whole life.

Pat McGrath Labs Liquid Eyeliner – $32

Black eyeliner has kind of become my thing, for better or for worse. I feel like I don’t look like myself without it — it makes my face feel like my face. One of my closest friends, Brenda Song, is also a big makeup lover and she turned me on to this liner. It is the deepest black of all my black liners. Pat McGrath is a legend and I’ll give her all my money. Because of the price point, it’s more of a special-occasion liner. It’s incredibly smooth, with a felt tip, which is what I prefer. I don’t love brush-tip liners, I like the precision of a felt tip. To anyone who wants to try it, I would say to keep your eye open when you draw the liner on. I know it sounds weird, I know it sounds crazy, but closing your eye kind of warps the shape. You can draw a beautiful, smooth line and then, when you open your eye, it’s all totally different.

Knitter’s Pride Zing Deluxe Interchangeable Needles Set – $75

I’m a big knitter and circular needles are my favorite because you can put your knitting down before you’re finished without worrying that your stitches are going to fall off. That’s a big concern with regular needles because you can lose a whole row if you put them down in a hurry. I avoided circular needles for a while until I saw my friend using them. I thought circular needles were just for knitting circular things, but you can make anything with these. The set comes with different size needles, too, including tiny ones you can make socks with. I don’t want to sound like a crazy knitting person, but truly, the sky’s the limit.

Acupressure Mat – $40

This thing is basically like a bed of nails. I have really legitimate back pain and I’ve tried a lot of different things to soothe it. This is the best. It is covered in these little plastic spikes that are really intense if you don’t wear a shirt, but you can work up to that. You’re not going to get hurt by it, but you do feel it. Eventually, you kind of go numb; then, when you sit up, the blood rushes to your back. I think there’s something to that because it really helps a lot with my back pain. If you’re on your feet a lot during the day, you can also try walking on the mat — it’s brutal, but feels great. Back when I was on set, I would bring it because I would be on my feet for like 17 hours a day.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – $7

This is the funniest book ever written. It’s my comfort book. I take it with me on trips because I just like knowing it’s there. It makes me so happy. There’s an audio version from the ’80s, I think, which is also incredible. My brother had it on cassette when we were little — that was my first exposure to it. It’s such an incredible piece of writing. I saw a little of the movie and then I stopped, not because it wasn’t good, but because the book is so precious to me that I didn’t want the movie to interfere with the version in my head, you know? It’s too important to me to even go there.

Peloton Bike – $1,895

I’ve never liked to exercise and I’m way too shy for group classes. Even before the pandemic, I really couldn’t bear the thought of being in a group class. The Peloton bike gives shy people the experience of being in a group class. It’s kind of perfect if you’re antisocial. My favorite instructor is Christine D’Ercole. She’s an absolute badass and a real competitive cyclist. You can also take these scenic rides that look like you’re biking through a forest of a French town. It’s the only exercise I’ve ever looked forward to and that’s saying a lot.

Kamikoto 7-inch Nakiri Vegetable Knife – $205

I have terrible knife karma. I’ve accidentally done so many bad things to myself with knives. But the blunt end on this knife means there’s one less way I can wound myself. It’s specifically for chopping vegetables; now that I garden a lot, I use mine constantly and it really does the job. I like the cleaver shape, there’s something very pleasing about it. Right now, my garden is less exciting than in the spring and summer, but I actually just started seeding tomatoes inside. That’s really what gets me going.

David Bowie ‘Peter & The Wolf’ 1978 – $80

This record is very precious to me. If you love David Bowie, which everybody should, it’s an incredible experience. For anyone who doesn’t know what this album is, it’s a story told with an orchestra. It’s very different from anything you would hear now. I don’t think this is really done anymore and it’s a cool thing to hear. As a kid, my mom really pushed me towards classical music, so I listened to this a lot. It’s otherworldly because of Bowie’s voice and his presence. I’m pretty sure it’s available on YouTube, so you can just listen to it for free. But if you can get your hands on a vinyl copy, you really should. The record is a transparent green color. I have a thing for clear records. They do something for my soul. So this is a real treasure of mine.

Catbird Tiniest Key Charm, Yellow Gold – $88

The only piece of jewelry I wear every day. Mine is engraved with a little meaningful thing. I love everything at Catbird. Delicate, unique jewelry is my favorite and they just have so many beautiful things. They are my go-to for gifts. I’ve never been to their boutiques but I have always wanted to go.

Phantom quartz tower – $50

Los Angeles really ruins crystals for people that have a genuine interest in them. People have just like douche-ified it here. I’ve been collecting crystals forever. Phantom quartz are just quartz crystals that grow with the shadow of another crystal inside them. The effect is so beautiful and there are all different kinds. I have one called a Tibetan black phantom quartz that’s clear with a black phantom in it. You can get gorgeous crystals on Etsy for not that much money. I travel with a piece of phantom quartz because I have a lot of anxiety around travel and there’s something about looking at a thing that’s maybe a million years old, you know, that makes me calm down. It makes me think, You know, you’re just a speck in this dumb universe. Plus, they’re just really pretty crystals to look at.

Kat Dennings Doesn’t Know Where Darcy Will Be After WandaVision — She’s Just Glad to Be Back
Press Articles

If there’s one place Marvel fans wouldn’t have expected Darcy Lewis to make her grand return to the MCU, it’s on a Disney+ series focussed on Scarlet Witch and her spiral out of control. And yet, when WandaVision‘s fourth episode aired on Jan. 29, there was the illustrious former intern in all her glory. And we weren’t even the only ones shocked — when Kat Dennings sat down for a video call with POPSUGAR, she admitted that she had been surprised to get the call to return from Marvel.

“It’s so rare that you get to revisit a character at all, so something on this kind of scale with this long in between appearances is really fun,” she admitted. “[My first thought was] absolute shock, first. And then I said yes, without knowing what it was. I was like, ‘Yes, whatever it is, I’ll do it.'”

Honestly, who wouldn’t say yes without thinking to Marvel? It’s Marvel. (OK, so, maybe Chris Evans did, but that’s different.) “When they said it was WandaVision, I was a little bit confused! Only because that was the last thing I expected to hear,” she added. “Darcy didn’t interact with anybody in that world at all, so it was definitely a very unexpected pairing, but an absolute joy. I mean, it’s such a unique show.”

Seven episodes into the limited series, and there’s no doubt of how unique it is. Darcy’s return is thanks to the Hex, a forcefield around the city of Westview, NJ, that has seemingly been erected by former Avenger, Wanda Maximoff. Darcy — now a doctor in astrophysics — is recruited by S.W.O.R.D to figure out what the anomaly is and how to take it down. And from there, a lot goes down. For Dennings, the opportunity to evolve her well-beloved character was a welcome one. “The writers are amazing, and Jac Schaeffer, our head writer and executive producer, put so much thought and character development into Darcy. It was just so amazing — I’ve thanked her profusely,” she gushed. “I consider it a new role. She’s obviously been through a ton of school to get her PhD and become a doctor. She’s now an expert in her field, and she’s demanding respect. She’s a boss! So, it felt great — it feels so good to be portraying a smart woman and a cool character in the show.”

And Dennings took Darcy’s promotion seriously, admitting that she began listening to Neil deGrasse Tyson’s podcast StarTalk, because she wanted to hear a real astrophysicist talk. “These terms are very complicated, and when you’re saying them, you don’t want to sound like you’re sounding out a word for the first time,” she explained. “You want to sound like you’ve said it hundreds of times. So, that was how I prepared — I listened to an astrophysicist saying these words over and over, so I sounded like I had said them all the time. There’s an ease that a real astrophysicist has saying those words that I wanted to try and get.” We have to respect the dedication to the craft!

Darcy’s inclusion in this new “world” has allowed her to interact with new characters outside of her original Thor story, namely Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park). If Twitter had its way, the fast fan-favourite trio would have their stand-alone TV series after WandaVision! “Oh, well, what a dream,” Dennings said when I asked how it was working with her costars. “Randall is an unbelievable actor and the loveliest man you’ll ever meet! There’s nothing to complain about — we would sit down at that desk with our little bag of chips, and I was like, ‘God, I can’t believe I’m getting paid to do this as my job.’ And the great thing is that it doesn’t make sense that Darcy and Jimmy would be together in a scene, but now it’s happening.”

That mishmash of characters from different comic book backgrounds is what makes fans love the MCU so much, and it’s what made up some of Dennings’s favourite scenes. “It’s really fun to be in something that you know a lot of people are going to watch. Because as an actor, sometimes you put your heart and soul in something two people see, and that’s fine, too. But this is definitely a one-of-a-kind a situation,” she said.

Fans have two more episodes of WandaVision to enjoy seeing Darcy on their screen, and Dennings is adamant that she doesn’t know what’s in store for the doctor’s future. Could she ever be a superhero herself? Probably not, but Dennings theorized that if Darcy ever got powers, it would be less of the world-saving variety and have more of the self-serving element. “She could pour water from her fingertips? So, she could make cup of noodles and coffee at the same time,” she threw out. “It’s always about snacks with me. The power of snacks.” Maybe she’ll show up in Thor: Thunder and Love, alongside her former employee Jane Foster who’s set to become the goddess of Thunder, aka Lady Freakin’ Thor.

“Here’s the thing, I’ll do anything they say,” Dennings answered when I asked. “If Marvel called me and said, ‘We need you to get on a trampoline, and you’re just going to jump really high. Wherever you end up, we’re going to make a movie.’ I’m down. I’ll do whatever they say.” But, she hasn’t been asked to join the cast for Love and Thunder. “I don’t think I am [in the movie], because they are shooting it right now. But, my door’s always open for Marvel.”

You heard the lady, Marvel. Your move.

EVERYTHING IN WANDAVISION “HAS A PAYOFF” SAY STARS KAT DENNINGS AND RANDALL PARK
Media Press Articles

WandaVision is the most talked-about TV show of 2021 so far.

That is kind of to be expected, as the first Marvel Cinema Universe show on Disney+ was always going to be a big deal. But maybe what fans didn’t expect was for the show to be as strange as it is.

Instead of superhero battles and sci-fi action, for the first few episodes viewers instead got homages to the sitcoms of yesteryear, with an additonal sinister, unnerving edge.

The fourth episode finally pulled out into the wider MCU world, and gave us some clues as to what is going on. Returning characters Darcy Lewis (from the Thor movies) and Agent Jimmy Woo (first seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp) are now on the outside of Westview looking in, trying to figure out what is going on, just like the viewers at home.

We caught up with the Darcy and Jimmy – or more accurately Kat Dennings and Randall Park, the actors that play them – to talk about what they thought when they first discovered what the show was about.

“When I first got called in [by] Jac Schaeffer, the head writer, we sat in a conference room, and she had the whole show mapped out on the walls.” says Randall Park. “I was just so amazed.”

“‘I was like ‘What is going on?'” adds Kat Dennings. “This is the craziest thing I have ever seen.'”

“But seeing all of the work they put in to it, it all really makes sense,” she continued. “Everything you see has a payoff. There’s nothing put in purely by accident.”

“There’s a huge payoff that I think people will be really excited for.”

And based on what happens at the end of episode five, we are starting to see it all come together.

Wandavision’s Kat Dennings on plot twists, Marvel secrets & the role in Alice in Wonderland that got away
Press Articles

There are cryptic TV shows that keep you guessing and then there is Disney+’s first standalone Marvel TV show, Wandavision.

The show follows one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest relationships between Wanda Maximoff AKA Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen and Vision played by Paul Bettany. But for the first few episodes of the show there are no big Marvel Avengers-esque battle scenes and instead the pair are living very domesticated lives on various TV sound stages that act as parodies of classic TV sitcoms from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Confused? So are we, BUT as the show progresses and the domesticated bliss slips, the mystery heats up and so does the drama. At the centre of the plot twist is Kat Dennings’s Darcy Lewis (who was previously seen in the Thor movies) who takes on an investigative mission to try to figure what the actual f**k is going on – much like us at home.

Here, the former star of sitcom 2 Broke Girls and Dollface, opens up on Wandavision plot twists, her hopes for Wandavision season two and what missing out on a role in Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland taught her about success and failure…

How have you been looking after your mental wellbeing during this time?

My cat has never been happier. She doesn’t know what’s going on but it’s a rough, weird time to be a human person on planet earth, isn’t it? I started a garden and I had been wanting to do that ever since I moved here. I never had the time, or I never made the time before. I built the garden boxes myself and planted them last spring. I know it sounds like not a big deal, but for me it was. A nice thing to realise during this was that I wanted to feel better. Being sad is the worst. Obviously this is a horrible, sad time, but I found myself wanting to feel better which, again, sounds like not a big deal, but it’s a good instinct to know that you have the want to improve your situation.

As an actor you have really had a lot of your work stripped away from you this year and as a generation, we’re taught to strive for more constantly. What has that made you realise about what’s important and how you define success?

That’s an important and big question because it’s so true. I’m in my thirties now and I’ve been working my whole life almost. My life has been my job, my career, and work, work, work. It’s not necessarily the fun part of being an actress, but I really enjoy my work, I love to act and be on set. My life had been focused on that for so long and then all of a sudden, you have to stop. But the fortunate thing I also realized was that my priorities have been pretty good. My family has always been number one, and my friends, so I wasn’t jolted into realizing what was important. I felt like I already had that straight. But in a way, a lot of my life was filled with guilt before, because I’m away all the time. You’re often traveling, or you’re on set for hours and my typical work day is 16 -17 hours. I don’t see my loved ones as much as I would want so I’ve certainly taken advantage of that. I bubbled up with my brother, sister-in-law and their baby that they just had and I have realised that it’s people that make the world go round. Remember sitting down and getting a coffee with your best friend and talking sh*t for hours?

I know – I miss gossip! But thankfully we have Wandavision for out of this world escapism. Stepping back into the Marvel Universe there is so much secrecy and you are quite the plot twist…

Right! What’s funny is that, for anyone who remembers my character from the Thor movies, that was like eight years ago, and I was just happy to be there the first time. I was so thrilled to be in one movie, let alone two. Anytime Marvel calls I’m like, “Yes, of course. Whatever you want.” So, I didn’t know what the scope of my role was going to be. For all I knew, it was in one scene or I had a cameo. When I found out what was going on, I couldn’t believe it. Not only is she here to help solve this big mystery, but now she’s an expert – she’s a scientist!

How much of a geek are you in real life, on the science front?

My dad is a scientist, fun fact! He’s a biochemist, so, I’d like to say I know a little more than maybe a normal person, but I don’t understand half of what he says, so maybe not!

What shook you the most about your character, the plot line and the new Marvel world you entered into?

What was shocking from a production standpoint – and I always am surprised at this in terms of Marvel because it’s so rare – was that everything is already there for you to look at. Usually you’re looking at a tennis ball or you’re looking at a grip holding a light and eating a sandwich. It’s part of the fun of filmmaking. But in this case, that base, the SWORD base that you see was all built. It was an entire place with hallways, different rooms and even mugs on the desk – every detail was looked at. I was also just surprised to be the one saying all the scientific language, because I’m the last person that you would expect to be saying that stuff. There’s so much more to come. Don’t watch spoilers, people – save some magic for yourself.

I love that when people promote Marvel projects they literally can’t say anything about it…

Our talking point sheets are just what we can’t talk about. We can’t say anything basically, but it’s fun. When you go into these interviews you have a totally blank brain and that’s the best way to do it. I’m one of those rare people that can keep a secret. I do tend to tell my brother, that’s all and he can keep a secret. We’re basically one.

If you could be in the writers room for Wandavision season two what would you want to happen for Darcy Lewis?

Oh God, I’m grateful I’m not in the writer’s room because this show is so intricate. I don’t know if these shows are going to have second seasons but I would love to see Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis doing an X-Files show together, solving mysteries.

You have had such an amazing career from Two Broke Girls to Wandavision but is there, “no” that you have received in your life that has ultimately been an empowering one in retrospect?

I’m glad you brought that up because it’s so true. You see 10 jobs that have been a yes. For every one job, there’s a thousand nos that you don’t see, of course. I can even say during the pandemic I was attached to a film that was my dream role in every way, dream director, dream cast, dream script, dream role. I dropped out because they wanted to shoot during the pandemic, it would have involved me not being able to see my family, and traveling and coming back and quarantining away from them for a long time. My parents are older so I had to make that decision and it hurt so bad. I was so sad for a long time.

There was a movie I am still sad about so I don’t know if it gave me anything constructive. But I had a bunch of auditions for Tim Burton’s Alive in Wonderland. I know that seems strange, and I was as surprised as everybody else, but I got right up to the end, and he’s my favorite director. I was like, “I’m not going to get this because I’m wrong for it. But what if I did?” He hired the most perfect actress for that role, she deserved it, she’s wonderful, and she should have gotten it. But in my emotions I was like, “Oh, my God. What if I do get it? Now I’m close, and now I’m going to be devastated if it doesn’t work out.” It didn’t work out and I was devastated. But I look back now and I got to meet my favorite director and read a role for him -I got to be in a room with him, what a complete fluke. They put the wig on me and they did the makeup test – I was so thrilled. I was so sad afterwards and I think that might’ve been the only role I cried over losing. If I cried about every role I lost, I’d just be crying all day. I did learn an important lesson, which was, “You should try. Even if it’s not going to happen, try anyway.”

Spindrift Partnership
IS THAT A GENUINE SMILE COMING OUT OF MY FACE?! IT IS THE SMILE OF SOMEONE WHO FINALLY HOODWINKED HER FAVORITE BEVERAGE INTO SPONSORING HER…IT’S SPINDRIFT SPARKLING WATER, BABY. Never in my life have I approached a brand ASKING to partner with them out of sheer adoration. As a passionate (yet not remotely professional) gardener, I’ve become obsessed with only allowing REAL FRUIT (not “natural flavor” – actual fruit) into my consumables. Once I realized that everything I was drinking was “flavored”, I went on the hunt. I discovered @drinkspindrift which is the FIRST sparkling water made with 100% ONLY REAL SQUEEZED FRUIT and I became an absolute psycho, slowly converting my friends and family to the Drifter lifestyle. I may be part Spindrift at this point, as it is actually the only water I drink. Anyway. More to come. #realfruittastesbetter#spindriftpartner
