WandaVision head writer Jac Schaeffer reveals early drafts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series included flashbacks of what Darcy’s been up to.

WandaVision head writer Jac Schaeffer reveals early drafts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series included flashbacks of what Darcy Lewis has been up to in the time leading up to the series. Kat Dennings’ fan-favorite character was introduced to the MCU with the first Thor film but her only subsequent appearance was in its 2013 sequel before finally returning in WandaVision. Initially just a friend and intern to the God of Thunder’s astrophysicist love interest Jane Foster, the Disney+ series saw Darcy having finally received her doctorate in astrophysics.

Set shortly after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the show centered on its titular characters as they live an idyllic life in a suburban area magically changing to the tune of different sitcom eras. Though it becomes clear Wanda has some form of control over this bizarre reality, she and Vision begin to suspect a darker force is driving her and the crumbling nature of the world around them. Composed of nine episodes, the series acts as a catalyst for the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

While discussing the history of the Disney+ series with Rolling Stone, Schaeffer revealed that the early stages of development on WandaVision explored Dennings’ fan-favorite astrophysicist in the timeline leading up to the story. Despite enjoying what she and the writers’ room came up with for Darcy, the group elected to excise the material for pacing and tonal reasons. Read what Schaeffer revealed below:

“In earlier drafts, there was more of Darcy before she gets to the hex. And as the project coalesced it made more sense to keep everything base-centric, except for S.W.O.R.D. headquarters. So we lost some of that other stuff. But it was really fun to write for Kat and to see a little bit more [of] what’s been going on with Darcy. We had this idea that Darcy didn’t blip, but her grandmother did. And now her grandmother’s back and Darcy had pawned her old TV, so she has to go get the TV back. And when she plugs it in, Episode One pops up, and that’s how the broadcast is discovered. It was silly, it was too much of a detour. But that writing infused all the later writing for Darcy. We also jumped all over the opportunity to have her be a Ph.D. now. That was just delightful to write.”

Given she was absent from the franchise for the better part of a decade, the initial news of Darcy’s return to the fold for WandaVision was an exciting tidbit. These feelings were propelled higher when viewers got to see the quick-witted character flaunt her newly-earned doctorate and put the cynical S.W.O.R.D. higher-ups to shame. While an exploration of her backstory could’ve better balanced the real-world story with the faux reality of Wanda and Vision, the more straightforward nature of her introduction for the show proved plenty enjoyable.

With her time in WandaVision coming to an end as she flees from the authorities after helping stop S.W.O.R.D. director Tyler Hayward, it’s currently unclear if and when fans can expect to see Dennings’ Darcy return to the MCU. Though with Jane coming back for Thor: Love and Thunder, she just may turn up again sooner rather than later — unless Marvel chooses to give fans the Darcy and Jimmy Woo X Files-type spinoff they truly desire.

EXCLUSIVE: Michelle Nader has boarded Dollface, the Hulu comedy starring Kat Dennings, as showrunner for its second season.

Nader, who was showrunner and exec producer of Dennings’ CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls, replaces Ira Ungerleider, who was showrunner for season one.

The half-hour show is set to start production this summer after a long, Covid-impacted delay on filming with new episodes set to air in 2022.

The streamer said that Dollface was one of its “best performing new binge series for subscriber engagement” after it launched in November 2019 and was renewed in January 2020.

Dollface follows Jules, played Kat Dennings, a young vibrant woman who is dealing with the aftermath of being dumped by her boyfriend. With a broken heart, Jules battles her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women, with friendships she left behind and the new battle of dating post breakup.

Brenda Song, Shay Mitchell and Esther Povitsky also star.

The series was created by Jordan Weiss, who serves as an executive producer alongside Nader, Margot Robbie, Brett Hedblom and Tom Ackerley for LuckyChap Entertainment, Bryan Unkeless and Scott Morgan for Screen Arcade, Kat Dennings and Nicole King. Dollface is produced by ABC Signature Studios, part of Disney Television Studios.

Nader previously spent a decade under an overall deal at Warner Bros. Television, where in addition to showrunning 2 Broke Girls, she developed female-driven comedy pilots such as I Mom So Hard and an Iliza Schleshinger project at CBS, as well as a Quinta Brunson collaboration at HBO Max.

Previously, she created the U.S. adaptation of Kath & Kim starring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair for NBC while under a deal at Universal, and other past credits also include King of Queens, Spin City, and Dharma and Greg. She most recently worked on the CBS series B-Positive, produced by Chuck Lorre, and she currently has a pilot in development at Fox.

“I only run shows that Kat Dennings stars in – I think that’s a smart plan. She is incredible.” said Nader. “And Jordan has an amazing and distinct voice. She created a really unique world with such a fresh perspective, and I feel lucky to get to write for all these women. And an imaginary Cat Lady.”

“I feel incredibly lucky to have Michelle as a mentor and a partner this season,” said Weiss. “The way she writes women is thoughtful, hilarious, and real, and the way she runs a show follows suit. I’m so excited to work with her, Kat, Margot, and the rest of our Hulu/ABC team to bring another season of this show to life.”

“We are so lucky to have Michelle Nader running this show. I’ve seen her mastery and commitment firsthand and I can’t wait to be on a set with her again” said Kat Dennings. “She is the ideal person to take Dollface to new heights.”

Nader is represented by ICM Partners and Ken Richman at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman. Weiss is represented by UTA, Mosaic and attorney Patti Felker. Dennings is represented by UTA, Linden Entertainment, and attorney Harris Hartman.

Dollface will be returning for a second season despite production delays caused by the Covid pandemic.

The Kat Dennings-fronted comedy launched in November 2019 and the streamer called it one of its “best performing new binge series for subscriber engagement” at the time. It was renewed for a second season in January 2020.

However, there had been concern that Dollface might be the latest scripted series to have it renewal reversed due to Covid.

Craig Erwich, President of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, assures Deadline that this is not the case and said “we have a plan to bring it back”.

“That was a show that was impacted by Covid, it was one of the top shows we launched in [2019] and I’m excited to have it come back for season 2,” he added.

The series was created by Jordan Weiss, who served as an executive producer alongside showrunner Ira Ungerleider, Margot Robbie, Brett Hedblom and Tom Ackerley for LuckyChap Entertainment, Bryan Unkeless and Scott Morgan for Screen Arcade, Kat Dennings, Nicole King and Stephanie Laing. Dollface is produced by ABC Signature Studios, part of Disney Television Studios.

Love is in the air. In the last 10 days alone, three celebrities have announced their engagements, starting with Tallulah Willis last Tuesday, followed by Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Williams and former Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe this week. But the engagement streak isn’t over yet: Wandavision actress Kat Dennings, too, is heading down the aisle.

On Thursday, Dennings posted a slideshow on her Instagram with the lead image showing her and musician Andrew Wilkes-Krier holding hands. A three-stone diamond ring gleamed on her ring finger. The caption read, “Don’t mind if I do.” Also included in the slideshow was a photo of the couple kissing and another of Dennings showing off her new piece of jewelry. Wilkes-Krier posted the same slideshow to his own Instagram account, with an engagement ring emoji for a caption.

According to Mike Fried, the CEO of diamond consulting firm The Diamond Pro, Denning’s three-stone ring includes a center emerald-cut diamond that he estimates to be around 4 carats, as well as two trapezoid side stones that help showcase the center stone. “While many celebrity rings we’ve seen in 2021 are solitaires or halos,” says Fried, “[Wilkes-Krier] opted for a personal touch by designing it with side stones.”

Though correct about solitaire-style rings spiking this year — Willis, Williams, and Bristowe all received solitaire engagement rings — three-stone rings are far from unheard of. The Duchess of Sussex wears one, composed of two diamonds from Princess Diana’s collection and one from a trip that she and Prince Harry took to Botswana. And if we had to pick anyone to wear twin diamonds with, Meghan Markle would be at the top of the list.

    Kat Dennings is a bride-to-be.

On Thursday, the actress, 34, announced her engagement to singer Andrew W.K., 42, after confirming their relationship on social media over a week prior.

“Don’t mind if I do,” Dennings captioned her engagement post on Instagram, along with three photos of the couple, two of which showed off her massive diamond ring.

Her fiancé shared the same three photos on his Instagram page, simply captioning his post with the diamond ring emoji.

Four days before announcing her engagement, Dennings wished the musician a happy birthday by posting a photo of the couple kissing.

On May 3, Dennings made their romance Instagram official when she shared two sultry photos of the rocker on Instagram using a heart emoji.

Dennings previously dated musician Josh Groban after they were introduced to each other by 2 Broke Girls star Beth Behrs. But they ultimately called it quits in 2016 after two years together.

Meanwhile, W.K. was married to Cherie Lily — whom Dennings follows on Instagram — in 2008. W.K. and Lily “began amicable divorce proceedings in late 2019,” a previous press release from W.K. confirmed.

    oh hi

May 05, 2021  Sparrow No comments Press Articles

Despite the recent spate of high-profile relationships coming to an end, from J-Rod to Bill and Melinda Gates, there’s still one set of stars committed to proving that love isn’t dead—Kat Dennings and Andrew W.K.

The unexpected pair appeared to confirm their relationship on Sunday when both posted the same selfie to their Instagram accounts. The shot shows the rock star—synonymous with all-white outfits and a passion of partying—kissing Dennings gently on the forehead as she pouts her lips at the camera. W.K. also posted a photo of them kissing on the mouth to his Instagram Stories, and, two days prior, the actress shared two photos of the musician leaning casually against a black pole captioned with a simple black heart emoji.

Dennings previously dated Josh Groban after they were introduced by her 2 Broke Girls co-star Beth Behrs. But in 2016, after two years together, the couple decided to end their relationship. W.K. married fellow musician Cherie Lily in 2008 and it remains unclear when they actually separated, but he last posted a photo of Lily promoting his merch on Instagram in December 2018.

While this new relationship might seem like it’s coming out of left field, Dennings actually dropped a clue about her new boyfriend on Twitter a month ago. At the beginning of April, the actress tweeted out a screenshot of W.K. pretending to be a Fox News weather man walking past a map of the midwest that just says “PARTY” over and over again. She wrote alongside the image, “me on my vaccinated walks,” to which the rocker replied with a red heart emoji. And it seems this love connection might have actually been years in the making as, back in 2014, Dennings made her interest in W.K. crystal clear, replying to a photo he tweeted of himself, “You are a tall drink of milk AWK.” But this new couple does already have one serious hurdle they’re going to have to overcome, as that same year the actress also tweeted, “White pants are dumb.”

On their episode of April 8th, the ladies of The Crooked Key Podcast shared stories from their listeners about haunted attics and basements. As a bonus, they also talked of a story Kat has shared recently with Jimmy Kimmel about growing up in a haunted house.

Unsurprisingly, she enjoyed it — back in 2014, talking to Conan O’Brien, Kat revealed her childhood obsession with The Addams Family, particularly with the character Wednesday, so of course growing up in a historical society certified house in Pennsylvania could be nothing but a goth blast!

Kat talked a bit more extensively about the house in particular when being interviewed by Alex McLevy of AV Club. Built in 1694, the building was used as a port house and frequented by William Penn himself. And the Litwack family got acquainted with routinary horror movie tropes. “It sounds so crazy, but I swear—you could ask my father, who is 89 who saw some shit. We all saw some shit”, Kat said back in May 2018.

“It’s not unpleasant. It didn’t feel scary. It just felt like—the air felt thick and electric-y. You know what I mean? Like there were a thousand dead people looking in your soul or something”, she said in the same article. We guess pretending you’re Wednesday Addams and sleeping with your arms crossed is only natural if you’re living in a historical house with flickering lights as a kid. We would have acted the same way.

Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing. Life is far from dull. In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams…

March 17, 2021  Sparrow No comments Projects, WandaVision

WandaVision is functionally two stories being told in parallel with each other: Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) in Westview, and Jimmy (Randall Park), Monica (Teyonah Parris), and Darcy (Kat Dennings) outside the Hex. We didn’t get as much time with the latter trio, which is understandable because we were already several episodes deep into the all-too-brief series when they made their first appearances. Even so, it’s hard not to wonder what they were doing all that time between the action beats. Yoga? Donut breaks? playing Cyberpunk 2077? Shockingly, it’s none of the above. The trio was actually quite busy behind the scenes, we just didn’t get to see it.

On a similar topic, director Matt Shakman revealed on Kevin Smith’s podcast Fatman Beyond that several scenes were cut from the final episode. These cut scenes include a shot-but-never-rendered Goonies-style romp through Agatha’s (Kathryn Hahn) basement, and some alternate Monica scenes. Looper spoke with several of the creatives involved with WandaVision, including Shakman and showrunner Jac Schaeffer, and we asked what else was hard to cut. In our discussions, we got an answer as to why we didn’t see more of Jimmy, Monica, and Darcy’s adventures: They were cut for time and storytelling efficiency.

When asked which scenes were hardest to cut, Schaeffer brought up those three, and explained why they were cut: “There were more scenes in the base, with Monica and Jimmy and Darcy, things that were on the page that we didn’t shoot, where there was more theorizing. And we ultimately determined that it was just too much treading water. And also, it was a little bit self-congratulatory, because it was a lot of them figuring out the mystery, which was a mystery that we as writers built. So, right correctly, that those things fell to the side. But I think I just loved the trio so much, that it would have been fun to shoot and include more of their ensemble.”

That’s not to say Shakman and Schaeffer aren’t still thinking of them, obviously. When asked what Jimmy, Monica, and Darcy are doing now, director Matt Shakman said, “Jimmy’s a hard worker. He’s catching bad guys, of course. Monica, we’ll have to wait and see Captain Marvel 2 what she’s up to … And Dr. Darcy Lewis, the top of her field, I’m sure she’s got a lot of people asking for her time and attention.”

    Add us to that list.

In a recent interview with GRAZIA, WandaVision’s design producer Marth Worthington talked about the process of designing the sets for the show’s different eras, in the middle of a pandemic to boot!, and what we would expect to see if WandaVision had gotten its own COVID-19 scenario.

Asked what it was like working with actresses Elizabeth Olsen and Kat Dennings, Worthington replied:

They were fantastic. Incredible actors as you can see the range in this. I mean, not that you didn’t see it before. You did, obviously, the both of them. But what a pleasure. They’re both lovely and so positive and so complimentary of the sets. They would come onto the sets and be very like, ‘Oh my God this feels totally like this sitcom!’ so it was gratifying that our scenery was able to help them provide energy for their performances.

WandaVision came to an end last week and while it wrapped up pretty perfectly, there are still a few unanswered questions. One surprising thing about the finale was that it barely featured Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis. The character, who returned for the first time since Thor: The Dark World in 2013, played a major role in the series but was only seen briefly t-boning Director Hayward (Josh Stamberg) with her car and declaring, “Have fun in prison!” While this was a perfect Darcy moment, many have wondered why she was not in more of the episode. During a recent interview with TV Line, producer Mary Livanos revealed it wasn’t due to COVID reshoots.

“I don’t think [Dennings’ absence] had to do with anything COVID-related,” Livanos shared. “We love Darcy as this elusive, wacky character, and I find it particularly delightful that Darcy could pop up anywhere in the universe.”

While that doesn’t explain why she wasn’t in more of the finale, it does give us hope that she will be pop up again in the future. Dennings recently shared with the Keep It podcast that her role in Thor was originally supposed to be a couple of scenes, but her friendship with Portman inspired a bigger part.

“Because Natalie and I are already friends, I remember this exactly,” Dennings shared. “I walk in the room and I’m very shy. I came in and I sat down and Natalie hadn’t gotten there yet and everyone was so nice. Natalie came in and sat on my lap because we’re friends. I think our friendship started to infect them [like] its purity and love. Slowly, Darcy became more involved, and I was like, ‘Why are they adding me to scenes?'” She added, “If I am being honest, friendship magic is the reason I’m here today.”

A fun piece of news from this week. Actress Maya Rudolph has paid a whopping $2.6M for a house that previously belonged to our own Miss Dennings. Kat lived in this house located in the LA district of Sherman Oaks between the years of 2012-13 and 2016, bought in turn from Who What Wear founder Katherine Power. Originally purchased for $1.2M, Power flipped the property before passing it along to her friend Kat.

According to Architectural Digest, the house that was built in 1938 measures 2,810 square feet and includes 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms.

You can view photographs of how the house is doing over at Dirt, if you’re curious to picture Kat living in it.

For some bonus trivia, we would like to note that both actresses, Dennings and Rudolph, do share one project in common, Big Mouth, where they lend their voices to the characters Leah Birch and Connie the Hormone Monstress, respectively. Additionally, both participated in the same editorial for Vanity Fair magazine back in 2009, “Ain’t We Got Style?”, shot by Mark Seliger. Dear Anton Yelchin is also pictured in Seliger’s photographs.

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hairspray and the electric toothbrush. We asked actress Kat Dennings — a star of WandaVision, which is now streaming on Disney+ — about the eyeliner, vegetable knife, and vinyl record she can’t live without.

Thayers Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel Facial Toner with Rose Petal – $11

I got my first bottle of this toner at the drugstore when I was about 13. I remember seeing something on the back of the bottle that said the lady who invented it always looked ten years younger than her age — such a big claim! I remember thinking, What is it going to do, make me look 3? But it’s a really good toner and not expensive. My skin is really delicate and this has never failed me. I also have an intense scent memory around it, like it’s kind of a mood-booster for me at this point. It’s very refreshing and the scent of it is just so delicious that I’ve basically been hooked for my whole life.

Pat McGrath Labs Liquid Eyeliner – $32

Black eyeliner has kind of become my thing, for better or for worse. I feel like I don’t look like myself without it — it makes my face feel like my face. One of my closest friends, Brenda Song, is also a big makeup lover and she turned me on to this liner. It is the deepest black of all my black liners. Pat McGrath is a legend and I’ll give her all my money. Because of the price point, it’s more of a special-occasion liner. It’s incredibly smooth, with a felt tip, which is what I prefer. I don’t love brush-tip liners, I like the precision of a felt tip. To anyone who wants to try it, I would say to keep your eye open when you draw the liner on. I know it sounds weird, I know it sounds crazy, but closing your eye kind of warps the shape. You can draw a beautiful, smooth line and then, when you open your eye, it’s all totally different.

Knitter’s Pride Zing Deluxe Interchangeable Needles Set – $75

I’m a big knitter and circular needles are my favorite because you can put your knitting down before you’re finished without worrying that your stitches are going to fall off. That’s a big concern with regular needles because you can lose a whole row if you put them down in a hurry. I avoided circular needles for a while until I saw my friend using them. I thought circular needles were just for knitting circular things, but you can make anything with these. The set comes with different size needles, too, including tiny ones you can make socks with. I don’t want to sound like a crazy knitting person, but truly, the sky’s the limit.

    Acupressure Mat – $40

This thing is basically like a bed of nails. I have really legitimate back pain and I’ve tried a lot of different things to soothe it. This is the best. It is covered in these little plastic spikes that are really intense if you don’t wear a shirt, but you can work up to that. You’re not going to get hurt by it, but you do feel it. Eventually, you kind of go numb; then, when you sit up, the blood rushes to your back. I think there’s something to that because it really helps a lot with my back pain. If you’re on your feet a lot during the day, you can also try walking on the mat — it’s brutal, but feels great. Back when I was on set, I would bring it because I would be on my feet for like 17 hours a day.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – $7

This is the funniest book ever written. It’s my comfort book. I take it with me on trips because I just like knowing it’s there. It makes me so happy. There’s an audio version from the ’80s, I think, which is also incredible. My brother had it on cassette when we were little — that was my first exposure to it. It’s such an incredible piece of writing. I saw a little of the movie and then I stopped, not because it wasn’t good, but because the book is so precious to me that I didn’t want the movie to interfere with the version in my head, you know? It’s too important to me to even go there.

    Peloton Bike – $1,895

I’ve never liked to exercise and I’m way too shy for group classes. Even before the pandemic, I really couldn’t bear the thought of being in a group class. The Peloton bike gives shy people the experience of being in a group class. It’s kind of perfect if you’re antisocial. My favorite instructor is Christine D’Ercole. She’s an absolute badass and a real competitive cyclist. You can also take these scenic rides that look like you’re biking through a forest of a French town. It’s the only exercise I’ve ever looked forward to and that’s saying a lot.

    Kamikoto 7-inch Nakiri Vegetable Knife – $205

I have terrible knife karma. I’ve accidentally done so many bad things to myself with knives. But the blunt end on this knife means there’s one less way I can wound myself. It’s specifically for chopping vegetables; now that I garden a lot, I use mine constantly and it really does the job. I like the cleaver shape, there’s something very pleasing about it. Right now, my garden is less exciting than in the spring and summer, but I actually just started seeding tomatoes inside. That’s really what gets me going.

    David Bowie ‘Peter & The Wolf’ 1978 – $80

This record is very precious to me. If you love David Bowie, which everybody should, it’s an incredible experience. For anyone who doesn’t know what this album is, it’s a story told with an orchestra. It’s very different from anything you would hear now. I don’t think this is really done anymore and it’s a cool thing to hear. As a kid, my mom really pushed me towards classical music, so I listened to this a lot. It’s otherworldly because of Bowie’s voice and his presence. I’m pretty sure it’s available on YouTube, so you can just listen to it for free. But if you can get your hands on a vinyl copy, you really should. The record is a transparent green color. I have a thing for clear records. They do something for my soul. So this is a real treasure of mine.

Catbird Tiniest Key Charm, Yellow Gold – $88

The only piece of jewelry I wear every day. Mine is engraved with a little meaningful thing. I love everything at Catbird. Delicate, unique jewelry is my favorite and they just have so many beautiful things. They are my go-to for gifts. I’ve never been to their boutiques but I have always wanted to go.

    Phantom quartz tower – $50

Los Angeles really ruins crystals for people that have a genuine interest in them. People have just like douche-ified it here. I’ve been collecting crystals forever. Phantom quartz are just quartz crystals that grow with the shadow of another crystal inside them. The effect is so beautiful and there are all different kinds. I have one called a Tibetan black phantom quartz that’s clear with a black phantom in it. You can get gorgeous crystals on Etsy for not that much money. I travel with a piece of phantom quartz because I have a lot of anxiety around travel and there’s something about looking at a thing that’s maybe a million years old, you know, that makes me calm down. It makes me think, You know, you’re just a speck in this dumb universe. Plus, they’re just really pretty crystals to look at.

It is a tough week for all Darcy Lewis fans out there. The final episode for WandaVision starts streaming on Friday, thus concluding Marvel’s first project on Disney’s streaming platform. While Kat has seemingly teased new ventures for our beloved astrophysicist, no solid and credible information has made headlines yet. We at KDD will keep you posted when credible information surfaces the internet.

Jules Wiley‘s fans, however, can rejoice, as Dollface hits Disney+ under the Star brand. The series availability is subject to regional catalogues — the UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia will be the lucky ones to guest first access. According to the Disney Plus Informer, only the premiere episode, “Guy’s Girl” will be available, with a new episode being released each following Friday.

Still according to them, “select countries” in Europe will be able to enjoy the show as well. We will have to wait and see exactly what countries have been selected.

If you’re in Europe give it a try — we can testify that the Portuguese chapter of the service offers a quick glimpse of its description before falling to a never-ending loop for a show that is not yet in the catalogue. We’re hopeful this means Portugal will be among the selected few to get Dollface this week.

New trio alert — Darcy, Vision, and a funnel truck.

Get ready for the most unlikely trio to arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Vision, Dr. Darcy Lewis, and a stolen funnel cake truck. The latest episode of Marvel Studios’ WandaVision, “Breaking the Fourth Wall,” sees the synthezoid and the doctor hijack the vehicle to escape the circus and try to make it back to Westview, no matter what speed bumps might appear along the way.

Kat Dennings returns to the MCU for the first time since her role in Marvel Studios’ Thor: The Dark World, and it’s clear since then, Darcy has become a respected member in the field of astrophysicists…and also an avid watcher of ‘WandaVision.’ Talking to Marvel.com, Dennings explained what it’s like to be back, what it was like to drive around in that funnel cake truck, and how there’s a hidden meaning behind her costumes this season.

Welcome back to the MCU, we’ve been waiting for you! How exciting is this?

It’s so exciting. It’s so unexpected. I mean, I did not expect to get that call. And I said yes immediately not knowing what I was saying yes to, and I didn’t care. But I was certainly so excited to be part of WandaVision. It’s definitely the most unique and surprising premise of anything, I think, Marvel’s ever done or anyone’s ever done, if I’m being honest.

And Darcy now has her own Twitter emoji!

Wow, that was like the big — I mean, I was already happy. But the emoji really sealed the deal. The Dark World had Minimates, so I have a Darcy Minimate. And with that I was like, “Well, I can die now. That’s it, that’ll do.” [That Minimate was] the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

But now, with an emoji, I had a freak out, I really did it. Now there’s Instagram GIFs, there’s a little Darcy one with a little light bulb. It’s amazing. This is the kind of thing that gets me excited.

What did you know about WandaVision when it was first pitched to you? Was it very basic like, “It’s a sitcom thing!” How was it explained to you?

I had my first in-person meeting with Jac Schaeffer and Matt Shakman, the writer and director, and it was in the Marvel offices. And the room — it’s covered like serial killer style. The walls are just papered with comic book pages and references to all the sitcoms. And all the different eras had their own space on the wall.

And I was just like, “What are you doing?” and, “How are you going to do this?” They laid it all out for me. But I will confess that I was like, I don’t understand how this is going to go. This is insane. It’s a massive undertaking that they — I mean, the writers are unbelievable — they pulled it off amazingly.

How does it feel for Darcy to now be one of the smartest people in the room?

Well, it’s a feeling I’m [personally] not familiar with [laughs]. So I absolutely loved it. That was one of the more fun parts was, for me, I didn’t know what Darcy could be doing there because Darcy’s had no interaction with [any of the characters in] WandaVision at all, right? Her interaction has been limited to Thor and Jane Foster and Erik Selvig, and that’s it.

She’s now an expert. She’s a doctor, she’s a PhD, she’s an astrophysicist. So she is one of the smartest people there, without question, maybe the smartest. It feels good.

You team up with Randall Park and Teyonah Parris, and you three form your own little trio — Darcy, Jimmy, and Monica.  What was it like working with the two of them?

Oh, my god, amazing. I love Randall so much. He’s a wonderful person. And Teyonah is somebody that I hit it off with right away. I liked her right away. You know how you can just tell with people? I loved her right away.

And we have a really fun relationship in the show because Darcy’s a Monica fangirl. We see, in Episode 5, when she meets Monica. She’s like, “I know who you are!” She’s so excited she gets to be near Monica Rambeau. And she’s a big fan, so there’s that fun thing of Darcy idolizes her and also gets to help. And then they become friends. And it’s great, it’s fun. It’s like a fun little team.

You leave the two of them for a bit, after you’re accidentally sucked into the Westview anomaly at the end of Episode 6, and we meet the “escape artist” in Episode 7.

Yeah, that was unbelievable. I also didn’t know that was going to happen.

There’s a theme in Darcy’s costumes that the very astute will notice, which is this teal color. Mayes is such an artist that she was like, “Everything is teal to match your eyes.” I was like, what? That’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever said to me.

So a lot of Darcy’s main costumes are my eye color. So she based that whole look off of that, which is just an incredible— she’s amazing. Who else would think of that?

And the character I play is the escape artist because Wanda has expanded the hex. And now the S.W.O.R.D. base is a circus. So I’m the escape artist with chains and whatever. And it obviously didn’t change her personality too much.

Following that, you actually teamed up with Vision. Can you talk about working with Paul Bettany and the mad chase you two go on?

I will say, that was probably one of the highlights of my entire career because I’m a massive fan of him, as an actor, not just from the Marvel films, but as an actor. I think he’s one of the best. He’s also a lovely, wonderful, funny, great guy. And I was like, my god, I cannot believe I have scenes with this dude. I can’t believe it.

And it’s the most unexpected team. People think Jimmy and Darcy are unexpected, wait for Darcy and Vision together! So I will say, those scenes with him were the scenes I was probably the most excited about. The look of it is so amazing.

Being able to act with Paul Bettany, what an unforgettable experience. It was a great time. That truck is very funny. There were efforts to get that Funnel of Love logo as many places as they could.

If there’s one place Marvel fans wouldn’t have expected Darcy Lewis to make her grand return to the MCU, it’s on a Disney+ series focussed on Scarlet Witch and her spiral out of control. And yet, when WandaVision‘s fourth episode aired on Jan. 29, there was the illustrious former intern in all her glory. And we weren’t even the only ones shocked — when Kat Dennings sat down for a video call with POPSUGAR, she admitted that she had been surprised to get the call to return from Marvel.

“It’s so rare that you get to revisit a character at all, so something on this kind of scale with this long in between appearances is really fun,” she admitted. “[My first thought was] absolute shock, first. And then I said yes, without knowing what it was. I was like, ‘Yes, whatever it is, I’ll do it.'”

Honestly, who wouldn’t say yes without thinking to Marvel? It’s Marvel. (OK, so, maybe Chris Evans did, but that’s different.) “When they said it was WandaVision, I was a little bit confused! Only because that was the last thing I expected to hear,” she added. “Darcy didn’t interact with anybody in that world at all, so it was definitely a very unexpected pairing, but an absolute joy. I mean, it’s such a unique show.”

Seven episodes into the limited series, and there’s no doubt of how unique it is. Darcy’s return is thanks to the Hex, a forcefield around the city of Westview, NJ, that has seemingly been erected by former Avenger, Wanda Maximoff. Darcy — now a doctor in astrophysics — is recruited by S.W.O.R.D to figure out what the anomaly is and how to take it down. And from there, a lot goes down. For Dennings, the opportunity to evolve her well-beloved character was a welcome one. “The writers are amazing, and Jac Schaeffer, our head writer and executive producer, put so much thought and character development into Darcy. It was just so amazing — I’ve thanked her profusely,” she gushed. “I consider it a new role. She’s obviously been through a ton of school to get her PhD and become a doctor. She’s now an expert in her field, and she’s demanding respect. She’s a boss! So, it felt great — it feels so good to be portraying a smart woman and a cool character in the show.”

And Dennings took Darcy’s promotion seriously, admitting that she began listening to Neil deGrasse Tyson’s podcast StarTalk, because she wanted to hear a real astrophysicist talk. “These terms are very complicated, and when you’re saying them, you don’t want to sound like you’re sounding out a word for the first time,” she explained. “You want to sound like you’ve said it hundreds of times. So, that was how I prepared — I listened to an astrophysicist saying these words over and over, so I sounded like I had said them all the time. There’s an ease that a real astrophysicist has saying those words that I wanted to try and get.” We have to respect the dedication to the craft!

Darcy’s inclusion in this new “world” has allowed her to interact with new characters outside of her original Thor story, namely Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park). If Twitter had its way, the fast fan-favourite trio would have their stand-alone TV series after WandaVision! “Oh, well, what a dream,” Dennings said when I asked how it was working with her costars. “Randall is an unbelievable actor and the loveliest man you’ll ever meet! There’s nothing to complain about — we would sit down at that desk with our little bag of chips, and I was like, ‘God, I can’t believe I’m getting paid to do this as my job.’ And the great thing is that it doesn’t make sense that Darcy and Jimmy would be together in a scene, but now it’s happening.”

That mishmash of characters from different comic book backgrounds is what makes fans love the MCU so much, and it’s what made up some of Dennings’s favourite scenes. “It’s really fun to be in something that you know a lot of people are going to watch. Because as an actor, sometimes you put your heart and soul in something two people see, and that’s fine, too. But this is definitely a one-of-a-kind a situation,” she said.

Fans have two more episodes of WandaVision to enjoy seeing Darcy on their screen, and Dennings is adamant that she doesn’t know what’s in store for the doctor’s future. Could she ever be a superhero herself? Probably not, but Dennings theorized that if Darcy ever got powers, it would be less of the world-saving variety and have more of the self-serving element. “She could pour water from her fingertips? So, she could make cup of noodles and coffee at the same time,” she threw out. “It’s always about snacks with me. The power of snacks.” Maybe she’ll show up in Thor: Thunder and Love, alongside her former employee Jane Foster who’s set to become the goddess of Thunder, aka Lady Freakin’ Thor.

“Here’s the thing, I’ll do anything they say,” Dennings answered when I asked. “If Marvel called me and said, ‘We need you to get on a trampoline, and you’re just going to jump really high. Wherever you end up, we’re going to make a movie.’ I’m down. I’ll do whatever they say.” But, she hasn’t been asked to join the cast for Love and Thunder. “I don’t think I am [in the movie], because they are shooting it right now. But, my door’s always open for Marvel.”

You heard the lady, Marvel. Your move.

WandaVision is the most talked-about TV show of 2021 so far.

That is kind of to be expected, as the first Marvel Cinema Universe show on Disney+ was always going to be a big deal. But maybe what fans didn’t expect was for the show to be as strange as it is.

Instead of superhero battles and sci-fi action, for the first few episodes viewers instead got homages to the sitcoms of yesteryear, with an additonal sinister, unnerving edge.

The fourth episode finally pulled out into the wider MCU world, and gave us some clues as to what is going on. Returning characters Darcy Lewis (from the Thor movies) and Agent Jimmy Woo (first seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp) are now on the outside of Westview looking in, trying to figure out what is going on, just like the viewers at home.

We caught up with the Darcy and Jimmy – or more accurately Kat Dennings and Randall Park, the actors that play them – to talk about what they thought when they first discovered what the show was about.

“When I first got called in [by] Jac Schaeffer, the head writer, we sat in a conference room, and she had the whole show mapped out on the walls.” says Randall Park. “I was just so amazed.”

“‘I was like ‘What is going on?'” adds Kat Dennings. “This is the craziest thing I have ever seen.'”

“But seeing all of the work they put in to it, it all really makes sense,” she continued. “Everything you see has a payoff. There’s nothing put in purely by accident.”

“There’s a huge payoff that I think people will be really excited for.”

And based on what happens at the end of episode five, we are starting to see it all come together.

WandaVision is streaming exclusively now on Disney+

Ahead of its broadcast, ET Canada reveals what to expect from Kat’s participation on today’s episode of The Ellen Show.

The “WandaVision” actress spoke with Ellen DeGeneres for a segment on her show airing Monday, February 15, about her desire for an additional pet. Dennings explained she already has one “genius” cat, Millie, and wants another feline friend. However, Dennings worries that either Millie, 8, wouldn’t get along with the newbie or that the pair would form such a strong bond they would ignore her altogether. That line of thought led Kat to think that maybe she should adopt a rescue fox. Dennings also spoke to Ellen about a toaster mishap that arose out of a desperate desire for a warm cookie, and what it was like reprising the role of Darcy Lewis eight years after appearing in the first “Thor” movie.

The Canadian website also released a video segment titled “Did Kat Tweet That?” where Ellen has Kat play a guessing game of whether she did tweet that.

There are cryptic TV shows that keep you guessing and then there is Disney+’s first standalone Marvel TV show, Wandavision.

The show follows one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest relationships between Wanda Maximoff AKA Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen and Vision played by Paul Bettany. But for the first few episodes of the show there are no big Marvel Avengers-esque battle scenes and instead the pair are living very domesticated lives on various TV sound stages that act as parodies of classic TV sitcoms from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Confused? So are we, BUT as the show progresses and the domesticated bliss slips, the mystery heats up and so does the drama. At the centre of the plot twist is Kat Dennings’s Darcy Lewis (who was previously seen in the Thor movies) who takes on an investigative mission to try to figure what the actual f**k is going on – much like us at home.

Here, the former star of sitcom 2 Broke Girls and Dollface, opens up on Wandavision plot twists, her hopes for Wandavision season two and what missing out on a role in Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland taught her about success and failure…

How have you been looking after your mental wellbeing during this time?

My cat has never been happier. She doesn’t know what’s going on but it’s a rough, weird time to be a human person on planet earth, isn’t it? I started a garden and I had been wanting to do that ever since I moved here. I never had the time, or I never made the time before. I built the garden boxes myself and planted them last spring. I know it sounds like not a big deal, but for me it was. A nice thing to realise during this was that I wanted to feel better. Being sad is the worst. Obviously this is a horrible, sad time, but I found myself wanting to feel better which, again, sounds like not a big deal, but it’s a good instinct to know that you have the want to improve your situation.

As an actor you have really had a lot of your work stripped away from you this year and as a generation, we’re taught to strive for more constantly. What has that made you realise about what’s important and how you define success?

That’s an important and big question because it’s so true. I’m in my thirties now and I’ve been working my whole life almost. My life has been my job, my career, and work, work, work. It’s not necessarily the fun part of being an actress, but I really enjoy my work, I love to act and be on set. My life had been focused on that for so long and then all of a sudden, you have to stop. But the fortunate thing I also realized was that my priorities have been pretty good. My family has always been number one, and my friends, so I wasn’t jolted into realizing what was important. I felt like I already had that straight. But in a way, a lot of my life was filled with guilt before, because I’m away all the time. You’re often traveling, or you’re on set for hours and my typical work day is 16 -17 hours. I don’t see my loved ones as much as I would want so I’ve certainly taken advantage of that. I bubbled up with my brother, sister-in-law and their baby that they just had and I have realised that it’s people that make the world go round. Remember sitting down and getting a coffee with your best friend and talking sh*t for hours?

I know – I miss gossip! But thankfully we have Wandavision for out of this world escapism. Stepping back into the Marvel Universe there is so much secrecy and you are quite the plot twist…

Right! What’s funny is that, for anyone who remembers my character from the Thor movies, that was like eight years ago, and I was just happy to be there the first time. I was so thrilled to be in one movie, let alone two. Anytime Marvel calls I’m like, “Yes, of course. Whatever you want.” So, I didn’t know what the scope of my role was going to be. For all I knew, it was in one scene or I had a cameo. When I found out what was going on, I couldn’t believe it. Not only is she here to help solve this big mystery, but now she’s an expert – she’s a scientist!

How much of a geek are you in real life, on the science front?

My dad is a scientist, fun fact! He’s a biochemist, so, I’d like to say I know a little more than maybe a normal person, but I don’t understand half of what he says, so maybe not!

What shook you the most about your character, the plot line and the new Marvel world you entered into?

What was shocking from a production standpoint – and I always am surprised at this in terms of Marvel because it’s so rare – was that everything is already there for you to look at. Usually you’re looking at a tennis ball or you’re looking at a grip holding a light and eating a sandwich. It’s part of the fun of filmmaking. But in this case, that base, the SWORD base that you see was all built. It was an entire place with hallways, different rooms and even mugs on the desk – every detail was looked at. I was also just surprised to be the one saying all the scientific language, because I’m the last person that you would expect to be saying that stuff. There’s so much more to come. Don’t watch spoilers, people – save some magic for yourself.

I love that when people promote Marvel projects they literally can’t say anything about it…

Our talking point sheets are just what we can’t talk about. We can’t say anything basically, but it’s fun. When you go into these interviews you have a totally blank brain and that’s the best way to do it. I’m one of those rare people that can keep a secret. I do tend to tell my brother, that’s all and he can keep a secret. We’re basically one.

If you could be in the writers room for Wandavision season two what would you want to happen for Darcy Lewis?

Oh God, I’m grateful I’m not in the writer’s room because this show is so intricate. I don’t know if these shows are going to have second seasons but I would love to see Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis doing an X-Files show together, solving mysteries.

You have had such an amazing career from Two Broke Girls to Wandavision but is there, “no” that you have received in your life that has ultimately been an empowering one in retrospect?

I’m glad you brought that up because it’s so true. You see 10 jobs that have been a yes. For every one job, there’s a thousand nos that you don’t see, of course. I can even say during the pandemic I was attached to a film that was my dream role in every way, dream director, dream cast, dream script, dream role. I dropped out because they wanted to shoot during the pandemic, it would have involved me not being able to see my family, and traveling and coming back and quarantining away from them for a long time. My parents are older so I had to make that decision and it hurt so bad. I was so sad for a long time.

There was a movie I am still sad about so I don’t know if it gave me anything constructive. But I had a bunch of auditions for Tim Burton’s Alive in Wonderland. I know that seems strange, and I was as surprised as everybody else, but I got right up to the end, and he’s my favorite director. I was like, “I’m not going to get this because I’m wrong for it. But what if I did?” He hired the most perfect actress for that role, she deserved it, she’s wonderful, and she should have gotten it. But in my emotions I was like, “Oh, my God. What if I do get it? Now I’m close, and now I’m going to be devastated if it doesn’t work out.” It didn’t work out and I was devastated. But I look back now and I got to meet my favorite director and read a role for him -I got to be in a room with him, what a complete fluke. They put the wig on me and they did the makeup test – I was so thrilled. I was so sad afterwards and I think that might’ve been the only role I cried over losing. If I cried about every role I lost, I’d just be crying all day. I did learn an important lesson, which was, “You should try. Even if it’s not going to happen, try anyway.”

The last time Kat Dennings brought her sardonic flair to the MCU was for 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, and she didn’t necessarily expect to ever return. But then WandaVision happened, revealing that Jane Foster’s former intern had not only changed her field of study from political science to astrophysics but gotten a doctorate. However, while her newly revealed knowledge proves key to unlocking core mysteries of what exactly is going on in Westview, her wry attitude towards life hasn’t changed.

While Dennings was excited to return to the role of Darcy, as she reveals below it wasn’t exactly the easiest process for her, and required her to do something she doesn’t normally like to do. But she’s still thrilled to see how people react to the character, and also reveal which era of sitcom she’d enjoy participating in the most.

How wild is it to just be back in the Marvel Universe?

Very wild, really incredible and unexpected. When I got the phone call, I was like, “What?” I was so excited. I was excited to be in one movie let alone two, let alone this, so I’m so excited. And it’s such a cool show and so unique from anything Marvel’s ever done.

Of course. When you found out that Darcy was not only going to be a major character but a doctor — I mean, that’s a major upgrade.

Huge. She’s obviously been in school this whole time, and it’s just really fun. You rarely get to pay off a role that started out kind of small and it becomes something else, so it’s really cool that I saw a few people being like, “I’m so proud of Darcy. She started out as an intern and now she’s a scientist.” It’s so cool that people like her and can recognize that journey she’s been on.

Of course. Was there anything tricky about slipping back into this particular character?

Well, it’s definitely a new experience. I have never revisited a role so many years later, so I had to rewatch and remember who Darcy was. But at the same time, she is a different person now. She’s a grownup and she’s become an expert in her field. All I wanted is to make sure I kept Darcy’s essence, but also let her grow up a bit.

So you’re saying that you actually went back and rewatched the first two Thor movies?

Yes. Yes, I did. Only once, that’s all I can take of myself on screen, but it was really fun to look back. God, the sense memory of that, it was such a wonderful experience so it was a pleasure.

When you say it sounds fun, what was the biggest, the most striking thing that came to you?

Well, I don’t know. God, I just remember everything about it. I remember we shot the first one in Santa Fe and I remember the weather there is nuts. I took a nap one day and I woke up and there was like a foot of snow on the ground, it was just so confusing. It was just such a good time. These things I’ve done marks a time in my life and watching them takes me right back, so it’s fun.

I’m not going to ask you to say anything about looking forward because, of course, you can’t tell me anything. But thinking about the general wide world of sitcoms, is there a particular era that you wish you could participate in?

Probably the ’50s — that’s the aesthetic that I prefer but also, it’s very cool and very technical. In that first episode when they’re in that era, all of the effects were practical. All the plates and all the food going around, that was on fishing line like they used to do back in the old days and they had a live audience. They kept it really accurate to what tactics they would use to shoot those, so that was very interesting to watch for me.

So the ’50s are the big one for you. Anything you hope that you get to try in the future?

That’s probably leading into a spoiler of some sort, so I cannot say a word.

We have added 215 HQ screencaptures from a 1080p source of Kat’s interview for Review Nation, released on February 2nd.

Among other interviews last Monday, Kat spoke to Screen Rant. Below, you can watch the interview video and read its accompanying article.

WandaVision brought back another MCU fan favorite last week, as the Disney+ series re-introduced the loquacious college student turned astrophysicist Darcy Lewis. Played by Kat Dennings, she was introduced as an intern and sidekick to Jane Foster in Thor and has now worked her way up to SWORD consultant and doctor.

Dennings spoke to Screen Rant about Darcy’s offscreen growth since Thor: The Dark World, her onscreen chemistry with Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo, and where her character might go from here.

A lot’s been made of Darcy being a doctor now and her credentials. I’m so proud of her. Do you have a backstory in your head for that development, or is that something we’re going to explore later on down the line in the MCU?

Well, first of all, thank you for saying that. That is very sweet. I’ve been really overwhelmed with the sweetness of the internet. That’s not something I ever thought I’d say. I really appreciate how nice people have been about Darcy.

But yeah, it’s funny. The main question I had for the writers was, “Was Darcy blipped?” Like, what happened? We decided amongst ourselves that she was not blipped. And while we don’t see that flashback, I like as an actor to imagine Darcy in the blip. Because that would be hilarious.

I think the idea would be that Darcy was influenced by Jane Foster and Dr. Selvig to become an astrophysicist. It’s kind of fun to watch her evolution, and now she’s a boss and she’s a doctor. I imagine she’s just been in school with her head in a book this whole time.

As far as you know, when was the last time that Darcy saw Jane Foster?

That’s a good question. What we know is that the last time was in Thor: The Dark World. I’d like to think that they saw each other more. I’d like to think that they have a text-phone call-FaceTime relationship.

I think they were in contact personally. I bet Jane wrote her a letter of recommendation.

Previously, you commented about really getting into the action in WandaVision. What’s been your favorite part about portraying Darcy this time around?

It never happens as an actor that you get to not only revisit a role, but bring that role full circle. Like I said, making her a doctor? That’s so gratifying to play. Because she was a fun college student, and now she’s like a boss, and she’s an expert. Now she gets to tell people what’s going on. That’s the most fun part for me.

And I will say those words are very hard to pronounce. I wanted to make sure I got them right, and they actually had an astrophysicist on set to help correct me if I said something wrong. Or if the lines were a little bit right, but a little bit wrong, she would come and be like, “Actually, it’s this,” and then we would change it to be accurate. So, it was a really, really cool experience.

Is it just me, or did I detect a little bit of chemistry between Darcy and Agent Woo? Darcy is usually pretty cold to people, but it seems like she connects with him. Is there a connection there?

Well, for the character, certainly. I love Randall Park. He’s a wonderful person and amazing actor. For me, I was just so excited to be in the scenes with him.

But for those characters, I think there’s that fun thing of two people that you never thought would be put together, from two completely different movies and different parts of the MCU. Seeing that is really fun, and I’m so glad people respond to it. It was fun to play. I love that scene with the potato chips. He’s a joy, and there’s a lot more of that.

What’s the biggest difference between working on these Marvel films and this new foray into the MCU television side on Disney+?

Shooting a show and shooting a movie are different, of course. There’s that thing of like, “Okay, we have to shoot this location out. So we’re gonna do this,” and whatever. There’s always a logistical thing with the show. It’s a little more controlled in a film, but Marvel is the best of the best. They’re as good as it gets, so it didn’t feel that different at all. They’re on top of their game, and obviously, everybody is is the best at their job. And it’s a real joy. That experience is pretty unheard of in the world of indie film, eating ramen in the closet like I usually do on set.

Among other interviews last Monday, Kat and Randall spoke to Cinema Blend. Below, you can watch the interview video and read its accompanying article.

In 2019, half of the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe disappeared. As seen in Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos successfully assembled the full Infinity Gauntlet, and when he snapped his fingers half of all life in existence turned to dust. Everyone eventually came back in Avengers: Endgame thanks to the efforts of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but still it has left a big question lingering in the canon: who got “blipped” and who didn’t?

Since the end of Avengers: Infinity War and seeing heroes like Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, and Nick Fury fade away in the moment, we have gotten confirmation about a number key individuals who did and didn’t go away – including Shuri, The Wasp, Peter Parker’s friends, and WandaVision’s Monica Rambeau – but still there are many whose specific experiences remain unexamined. Kat Dennings’ Darcy Lewis and Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo are two good examples, but at the very least we now have the actors’ own takes on what happened to their characters following the Mad Titan’s snap.

Both Kat Dennings and Randall Park made big Marvel Cinematic Universe comebacks this past week, reprising their respective Thor/Thor: The Dark World and Ant-Man And The Wasp roles on WandaVision, and while their separate arrivals on the show didn’t confirm whether or not Darcy and Jimmy were blipped, I felt compelled to ask them for their thoughts when I interviewed them yesterday afternoon. As seen in the video above, I spoke with them both during a virtual press day for the Disney+ series, and starting with Dennings she confirmed that she believes that Darcy didn’t get blipped:

That was also a question I had! That was talked about at length with the writers. I don’t think she was blipped. I would like a flashback to see Darcy not blipped. That would be very funny. But we decided she wasn’t blipped.

When you really think about it, Darcy Lewis not being blipped really does make the most sense. Fans may remember that when we first met her in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor she was hanging out with a couple of astrophysicists (a.k.a. Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and Stellan Skarsgard’s Erik Selvig), but she herself was only an intern, and a political science major to boot. Clearly her time with the God of Thunder made her rethink her life goals, as shown via her increased scientific acumen in Thor: The Dark World, but in WandaVision she is reintroduced as “Dr. Darcy Lewis.”

Getting a degree like that takes a fair amount of time, so it stands to reason that Darcy was not only not blipped, but used the five year gap to further her education and earn her doctorate. Which is objectively awesome.

As for FBI Agent Jimmy Woo, Randall Park was equally curious about whether or not he got blipped. In the making of WandaVision it was something that he too asked the writers about – though he didn’t quite get the same kind of confirmation as Kat Dennings. Said Park,

I did ask that question during the making of this, and I’ve gotten various answers [and] theories. I don’t know the answer for sure, but my theory is that he wasn’t because he needed that time to learn that card trick.

For those who don’t immediately register the reference, Jimmy Woo’s arrival on the scene in WandaVision sees him do a little sleight of hand trick with his business card – which Ant-Man And The Wasp fans will remember was a little hobby that he was inspired to pick up following his time monitoring Scott Lang.

Joking aside, it certainly would be believable that Jimmy has been around for the last five years just because of how well adjusted he seems in the face of all the craziness that WandaVision is throwing at him. It’s understandable that the official Marvel canon might want to keep his “blipped or not blipped” situation open ended just in case there is a specific idea that a filmmaker wants to pursue, but for now I think it’s safe to take Randall Park’s take on the matter and say that he wasn’t a victim of Thanos.

While it took until the fourth episode of WandaVision for them to arrive, Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo both appear to have some key roles to play in the rest of the mysterious Disney+ series, and we can’t wait to see what else they get up to. The next episode will be live on the streaming service at midnight on Friday, and while we have next to no idea what to expect (an extension of the show’s mysterious nature) we can’t wait to watch it unfold.

If Disney+’s WandaVision has been your entry point into the Marvel universe, you likely didn’t think much of Darcy Lewis introducing herself as “doctor” in the series’ fourth episode.

But for portrayer Kat Dennings — and MCU fans familiar with her character — that distinction was a milestone years in the making, and Dennings was glad to see Darcy correct a S.W.O.R.D. bigwig about her proper title.

“I like the tone it sets right off the bat. Like, ‘Sir, please. I am a doctor, thank you very much,’” Dennings tells TVLine. “I can only imagine, [as] someone who didn’t go to college, just how much she worked for that title, so she wants to be addressed correctly, as she should.”

Darcy first appeared in the 2011 film Thor, when she was studying political science at Culver University. While interning with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard), Darcy helped contribute to their astrophysics research, then later pursued her own doctorate degree in astrophysics in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World.

“I’m so grateful to the writers for giving her this rich backstory because the last time we saw her, she was Jane Foster’s intern, and the joke was that she’s a political science major and not a science major,” the actress adds. “It’s really fun to see that [the] influence Jane Foster had on her results in her actually becoming an astrophysicist… She’s the same girl, but now she has a bunch of degrees and a bunch of information. She’s a boss now.”

In Episode 4 of WandaVision, Darcy was also the only scientist to realize that broadcast frequencies were being emitted from Westview, allowing for the discovery of Wanda and Vision’s sitcom world — and per a cryptic Dennings, more notable (and perhaps unexpected) moments are ahead for the character.

“I will say that you definitely see things from Darcy that have not been seen before,” she teases, while also promising “a lot more” of the delightful dynamic between Darcy and Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo: “For me, there’s nothing more fun than watching two characters that you don’t expect together, put together.”

After appearing in the first two Thor movies, Kat Dennings has returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Disney+ show WandaVision.

Her character, Darcy Lewis, is one of the few original creations in the MCU that is not based on an existing comic book figure. That makes Darcy somewhat of a blank slate, and she could potentially turn up anywhere in the movies.

We got to speak to Kat Dennings, following her WandaVision come back, and asked who in the MCU she would like to see Darcy team up with. And she was very sure of here answer: Tom Hiddleston’s Loki.

In case you were not aware, Darcy and Loki are a pretty popular pairing amongst Marvel fans, often appearing in fan fiction and fan art. And Kat Dennings was keen to stoke the flames of the Marvel stan fire, and try and make it happen in canon.

“I know that there’s a lot of online stuff about Darcy and Loki, that’s been brought to my attention, which is so great,” said Dennings. “So I’ll hope for that.”

“I think it would be exciting for a few people on Tumblr. Do it for the Tumblr.”

“It would be a funny pairing. The two most opposite characters in the MCU. probably.”

This isn’t the first time she has alluded to the pairing – she shared a photo of her and Tom Hiddleston together when Thor: The Dark World was released back in 2013.

Dennings went on to talk about how Darcy’s new role as a doctor of astrophysics could see her “plopped” in anywhere in the MCU.

“The cool thing about Darcy being an original character and… now she’s Dr Darcy Lewis, she’s an astrophysicist, she’s kind of fair game for any interaction, which is very exciting.

“Of course, I wouldn’t expect anything further, but she could be plopped anywhere, I guess.”

Kat is not the only cast member who is being interviewed this week as the promotion for Disney+’s WandaVision continues. In a recent article from Entertainment Weekly, co-star Randall Park, who plays agent Jimmy Woo on the show, was asked how it was like to work with Kat — you can read her own interview with EW here. Interviewer Devan Coggan pointed out the obvious link between the two actors and sitcoms. This is what Randall had to say about Miss Dennings:

She’s the best. It was just so fun to be paired up with her and Teyonah, just as a group to try to figure out what’s going on in this town. But just as people, they’re so kind and fun to work with, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

And we hope they might work with each again in the near future, as the internet joins together to claim for a Darcy and Jimmy The X-Files style show.

Marc Malkin of Variety chatted with Kat over Zoom for the website’s podcast. She can be heard around minute 24:00. Below, you can read the accompanying news article.

Did you know that they were thinking about bringing back Darcy?

Once you’re in the Marvel Universe, you’re kind of there even if they kill you. You’re still there. A lot of time had gone by between the first two “Thor” movies and I didn’t know whether or not they’d ever bring Darcy back. And I never assumed that they would so when I got this call, especially for this, because Darcy has [had] nothing to do with Wanda or Vision, or the Avengers other than Thor, it was kind of like, “What is she doing here?” And that was my question. But of course, the initial phone call comes in and it’s a secret phone call. You sign an NDA before you get the phone call. They’re like, “How do you feel about this?” Like I’m gonna say no, at all ever to Marvel for anything. You say yes a then you’re in for a wild ride. You don’t even know what’s happening. I still don’t really know what’s happening.

Do they show you scripts or just tell you bits and pieces of what you need to know?

My first meeting with [writer] Jac Schaeffer and [director] Matt Shakman was at the new Marvel offices. I had been to the old offices, but never the new ones. It’s really intense and incredible. If you’re a fan of Marvel, your brain would explode, but you sign an NDA when you get to the lobby. So intense, so intense. And then once you do that, you sit and they bring you a little badge, and then you go into the room. And I understood why I had to sign the NDA before this meeting. The walls were just covered with the comic book pages with references. For a person who thinks comic books are like the end-all be-all, it was just like, unreal. They took this very serious. They always do, but this, specifically, they wanted to get this just right, because it’s so different from anything Marvel’s ever done. Everything has been meticulously planned. They laid out the sketch of it and what I would be doing, but to be honest I still don’t really know what happens.

How much fun is it to be on the set? It seems so immersive.

The thing for anybody in the industry or not, you know that usually your budget isn’t this kind of a thing. So they’re able to create everything and that’s so rare as an actor, because usually you’re imagining all of it, which is fun, it’s also really fun to do. But in this case, you kind of don’t have to, it’s there. So it’s just an unbelievable experience. I remember the first Thor movie, I had come from the world of like $10 indie movies so I couldn’t believe what was going on. They had this town built in the desert in Santa Fe, a whole town, everything was there. And we would start that’d be like a long shot in the back and we would round the corner and come towards the camera down the street. And the AD, which is the assistant director who says action and cut and whatever through a microphone, if you’re that far away. Usually you hear him screaming from 100 feet away, “Action!” But this time, his voice came through a speaker inside a newspaper box next to us on the street. It was like magic. I was like, “Oh my god, where is he?”

How spoiled do you get then?

You cannot get used to it. Don’t ever get used to it. You’ll never see that size of a trailer ever again. I didn’t know they made such a nice trailer. They do such a nice job for us. They take good care of us and they want us to be happy. And they want everyone to be happy and do their best. And that’s how it’s possible. Everyone feels good and taken care of and ready to go. So I love working for Marvel. [Laughs]

Are you going to be in the next “Thor” movie, “Thor: Love and Thunder?”

Still don’t know. I don’t think so. I’m gonna assume no, I feel like I would know by now. They’re shooting it so I don’t think so. I don’t know. I promise. Scout’s honor. I mean, I feel like someone would have alluded to it. I don’t know. But anything Marvel ever wants from me, I am always available for them. Not matter what.

I love how they kept Darcy very down to earth. I noticed that you’re eating Cup of Noodles and baked potato chips in your first episode.

They wanted to keep Darcy’s essence. At heart she’s still that college girl who eats trash ramen from 7-Eleven like me. And I really love that they put that in there. And they even asked — again Marvel spoiling their actors — what flavor Cup of Noodles do you like best? [Laughs]. Then they asked what kind of potato chips do you think Darcy would eat. I was like, “Well, she’s an adult now so maybe the baked ones.” [Laughs]. I love those little things. I’m so happy you noticed that.

Now, a fun question, what was the worst audition you ever went on?

It’s not the worst, but it’s the craziest and most memorable. I’m trying to figure out the aftermath of me telling the story and whether it’s worth it. I just won’t say names. So there was a film, very dramatic film that did come out and was nominated for a bajillion Oscars and was amazing. That’s all I’ll say about who, but the scene I was reading, this was like the final audition where I was reading with the actor. And in the scene I was being physically restrained by that actor. So the dialogue all had to do with me trying to get free from the guy. I’m pretty young at that point. I’m not nervous, but I know this is a big deal. I’m super excited to be reading with this famous actor and this hugely famous director that I really respect and he’s there and I’m like, “Oh, my God, this is a big deal.” I have everything memorized. I’m ready to get into like the physicality of the scene, but I realized pretty quick that that actor is not going to touch me. He’s also not going to be near me. He was at the other end of the room, which seemed to be his choice, which I was like I’m going to be miming this. So a scene where I am asking to be let go of and physically wriggling out of this man’s grip became a mining session. But I understand and I respect that the actor made that decision. But at the time, it was not great because I was like, “I look like an absolute moron.” I’m not getting this. But I enjoyed it. It was just not what I anticipated.

You say you understand and respect why the actor made that decision so you could tell me who it is.

I feel like I can’t because he’s one of my favorite actors of all time. But he didn’t do a bad thing. All right, it was Nicolas Cage. But the movie I won’t say. I don’t want this to seem like it was life ruining. It was great. In fact, you asked for the worst, but it’s one of the best memories because it was such a huge curveball and such a massive learning experience. And we ended up having such a nice conversation afterwards. It’s like one of my most cherished audition stories and I’m actually really grateful for that experience just because I wanted to be in a room with Nicolas Cage. It probably will never happen again. But what’s nice is that he was so respectful and I think that might have been where it was coming from like, I’m a young girl so he didn’t want to physically touch me and make me uncomfortable. I appreciate it. I really do.

Darcy Lewis has come a long way since we last saw her in Thor: The Dark World.

After eight years away, Kat Dennings returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Darcy in last week’s WandaVision episode. When we first met her in 2011’s Thor, she was a quippy former poli-sci student interning for astrophysicists Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) when they crossed paths with Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder, and she kept that position in the movie’s sequel. However, WandaVision‘s expository fourth episode revealed that Darcy got her doctorate and became an astrophysicist herself in the intervening years (but still rocks a beanie), which is why S.W.O.R.D. recruited her to help figure out what’s going on with Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and the town of Westview.

Below, EW chats with Dennings about her MCU return, WandaVision‘s unlikely pairings, and more.

You’ve been gone from the MCU for almost a decade. What was it like returning for WandaVision? How did this experience compare to the Thor days now that Marvel’s changed so much?

Yeah, it was amazing. That call was very unexpected, and of course I was delighted to be asked. I am just a big fan of Marvel in general. I had no expectations of ever coming back, so I was just thrilled.

In the intervening years, had you given any thought to what Darcy was up to during all the major events she wasn’t directly involved in?

Yeah, that was a question initially. Did Darcy blip? Or what happened? Where is she? But this kind of answered the question that she’s just been in school this entire time, I guess, becoming a doctor. Not an M.D., but becoming an astrophysicist.

I did love that moment when the S.W.O.R.D. agent called her “Ms. Lewis” and she corrected him and said “doctor.”

That’s right, I worked hard for that doctor title!

When you got the call to return, did Marvel pitch you on the idea that she’s become an astrophysicist now, and were you surprised by what she ended up doing after Thor 2?

I didn’t know she was a doctor. All I knew was that they wanted to bring Darcy back and that it was for WandaVision. So I was extremely surprised only because Darcy had had no interaction as a character with anyone in the world WandaVision at all, so I was like, “Wow, that was the last show I excepted to be a part of.” But when I saw what they did with it, it’s kind of an ingenious move for them.

On the podcast Keep It, you said you only read your scenes in the script and didn’t know what else was going on, which is funny because episode 4 makes Darcy and Jimmy Woo [Randall Park] the audience surrogates, trying to figure out what’s going on just like we are. But does that mean you were even more confused than the audience while shooting it?

Well, I did know initially because we read through all the episodes. So I was in on the table reads, so I knew what happened and what was going on, but I decided consciously to stop reading because I didn’t want to know too much and I’m not a good enough actor to fake not knowing anything [laughs], so it could only help me. And getting to this moment where we’re talking about it, I’m consciously trying not to spoil anything, but also there is an element of me really not knowing what happens, so it makes my job a little bit easier.

Part of the show’s appeal is that it’s playing with the sitcom format. Obviously, you spent six seasons on the CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls. Did you rely on any of that experience coming into WandaVision?

Well, you know, acting in a sitcom is completely different than acting in a single-camera show or film. It’s like an art form in itself. It’s absolutely crazy and you really have to learn how it works, so I really enjoyed the first few episodes of WandaVision seeing them do that. As a fan of their characters, it was so interesting and they all are amazing. I really enjoyed Paul Bettany being very, very funny. He’s like a genius.

So would it be fair to say you got a chance to put any of the skills you learned on 2 Broke Girls in this context?

Uh, I think you’re asking a clever question that I can’t answer. I love you for it. I appreciate the tactic, though.

I had to try! Part of the fun of watching episode 4 is seeing you and Randall bounce off each other. What was it like getting to work closely on that episode?

It was amazing. He’s a lovely, wonderful person, great actor, obviously. But it was so funny just because Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis, again, a couple of people who never interacted before in any of the franchises, so that was really fun. And I think there was that knowledge that, “Oh, people are going think this is cool.” It’s always really fun to see pairings that you don’t expect. So yeah, it’s a delight. He’s lovely.

A lot of episode 4 was you guys sitting behind screens, looking at things that would be added in postproduction. What did you do to make those scenes come alive for yourself?

That was difficult, I will say, because I knew what was on the screens loosely, but I didn’t see the footage so I was imagining it. So yeah, that tested my imagination a bit, but it kind of added to the mystery because when you see us solving a mystery, we really are solving a mystery. It’s like very cool to see it all put together. Watching the episodes is new for us as well: “Oh, that’s what I was reacting to! Now I see!” [Laughs]

In coming back to this role, was it hard to step back into character, or did you find that pretty easy?

I had to refresh myself on myself, if that makes sense. But my development for myself was more like, “Okay, she’s been in school this whole time. She’s learned a lot, but I don’t think she’s changed as a person that much.” We could get real deep and emotional on the subject of it people change or not, but I felt like I don’t think Darcy as a human being is that different but she certainly has become older, wiser, and more senior. Now she’s the boss, and she’s never been the boss before. I think there’s that confidence in herself that maybe she didn’t have before that was fun to see. I enjoy her. [Laughs]

I’ve heard that you try not to watch things you’re in, but have you watched episode 4 yet?

Yes, I do watch WandaVision because I’m not like the main character, so I think that enables me to watch it. It’s harder for me to watch myself in large doses, only because there’s something about, you know, we’re not supposed to see ourselves in motion like that. It’s not good, it’s not healthy. [Laughs] There’s an element, “Uh, I shouldn’t see myself this much.” So yeah, I try not to, but this one I’m able to, but also I think it’s just a cool show.

Although she hadn’t been seen since Thor: The Dark World, WandaVision episode four brought back the sarcastic Darcy Lewis, once again played by Kat Dennings, who has graduated to being a scientist in her own right in the ensuing years. But with filming on Thor: Love and Thunder now underway in Australia, what are the chances that Dennings will reprise her role in the MCU franchise that introduced Darcy?

IGN’s Jesse Gill posed that very question to Kat Dennings today during an interview to promote the latest episode of Marvel’s WandaVision.

According to Dennings, the chances of Darcy hanging out with her old pals Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) in Love and Thunder appear highly unlikely.

“Well, I have not gotten a call so I kind of doubt it since they’re shooting it right now so probably not,” Dennings told IGN, adding, “but anything Marvel ever asks of me the answer’s always yes.”

While Dennings’ Darcy may not return for the fourth Thor movie, plenty of other MCU veterans are, such as Thor and Thor: The Dark World‘s Jaime Alexander as the warrior Sif.

    Synopsis

Written in his distinctively dazzling manner, Oscar Wilde’s story of a fashionable young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty is the author’s most popular work. The tale of Dorian Gray’s moral disintegration caused a scandal when it first appeared in 1890, but though Wilde was attacked for the novel’s corrupting influence, he responded that there is, in fact, “a terrible moral in Dorian Gray.” Just a few years later, the book and the aesthetic/moral dilemma it presented became issues in the trials occasioned by Wilde’s homosexual liaisons, which resulted in his imprisonment. Of Dorian Gray’s relationship to autobiography, Wilde noted in a letter, “Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry what the world thinks me: Dorian what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps.

Kat Dennings joins Ira, Louis and Aida (writer for Big Mouth!) of Crooked Media’s Keep It! podcast, episode of 17 January, to discuss acting and WandaVision. Her part begins around minute 35:00.

“What’s interesting is…and Thor was like 10 years ago, so I don’t think they’ll mind if I talk about this. In the rehearsal process, because for Thor, this is like his story so it was like really you have to create and it’s very complicated. For anyone who knows the Thor stuff, it’s like Norse. There [are] gods. There’s stuff. There [are] rainbow things, and you have to make it grounded somehow so there’s a lot of rehearsal for the actors. The writer[s] and Marvel people will come to the rehearsals and just watch us interact and say the lines. My part, Darcy, was originally, like, two scenes, and she was literally just an intern, just there to kind of bounce off other people. It was the best day of my life. I could not believe these people hired me and like I duped them somehow [to hire] me.

And because Natalie and I are already friends, I remember this exactly. I walk in the room and I’m very shy. I came in and I sat down and Natalie hadn’t gotten there yet and everyone was so nice. Natalie came in and sat on my lap because we’re friends. I think our friendship started to infect them [like] its purity and love. Slowly, Darcy became more involved, and I was like ‘why are they adding me to scenes?’ That’s kind of what happened. If I am being honest, friendship magic is the reason I’m here today.”

Never break a nail or chip your polish while opening up a can of food ever again.

As you might have assumed, a fair amount of Allure staffers have long, flawlessly polished nails. Those of us who haven’t been visiting salons during the pandemic have been perfecting our nail-care and manicure skills at home, and seeing the results bring us a little joy during a weird time. A fair amount of Allure staffers also have (and adore) cats — another source of joy. But that joy can be instantly squelched if we break one of our beautiful nails opening cat food for one of our beautiful cats. And that’s why we’re thankful for the hack Kat Dennings shared on her Instagram Stories.

On Monday, January 18, Dennings did her best infomercial impersonation, starting a short string of videos with, “Good morning. Are you a person with long nails, but you also have a cat that eats food? Hi. I’m Kat Dennings. And this is a hack for you.” Dennings shows off her long, red manicure while holding a can of cat food with one of those dreaded tabs that threatens to break your nail or at least chip your polish.

“Go into one of your drawers and take out a little hair barrette. I know you have one — we all do,” Dennings continues, holding up one of those classic, triangular snap clips. She then demonstrates how she uses that to get under and lift the tab instead of risking any harm to one of her nails. “It’s the perfect curved shape. Slides right under. Boop!”

    Boop indeed.

Dennings has shared a lot of beauty tricks and hacks on Instagram over the last few months, and while this might not seem to qualify as true beauty hack — its purpose is opening a can of cat food, after all — it works to protect your beauty and implements a beauty accessory in an unexpected way. If that doesn’t count as a beauty hack, we don’t know what does.
