Listen to Kat as ‘Death’

Here’s an audio clip of the chapter ‘The Sound of Her Wings’ from the upcoming audio series The Sandman as shared by Entertainment Weekly. In the accompanying article, Neil Gaiman also shared the following:

It was a really interesting process looking at voices and actors. We had people saying, “oh you obviously cast Kat because she looks like Death,” and weirdly by the time we cast her, I’d forgotten that. A lot of it was about who was available. Kat was shooting a TV series Dollface at the time, but she managed to pull it off for us.

‘The Sandman’: What You Need to Know

The Sandman is a comic book series written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics. Audible and DC present the first-ever audio production of The New York Times best-selling series with the author himself serving as executive producer, with an adaptation of Gaiman’s frequent collaborator Dirk Maggs. Scheduled to be released next Wednesday, it’s the first instalment of a multi-part original audio series, focusing on volumes #1 to #3, totalling 20 episodes, with an estimated runtime of 10 hours and 50 minutes.

While Gaiman himself narrates and James McAvoy voices the titular character, Kat’s role is that of his spectral sister Death, who will make her first appearance in episode 8, “The Sound of Her Wings”. The original musical score is British Academy Award winner James Hannigan’s responsbility.

Kat’s participation came as an invitation by Neil himself, whom she’s a fan of. She told The New York Times, “I don’t know if this was a compliment or not, but he was like, ‘Just be you,’ I was like, what are you saying? But he was like, ‘She’s very sweet. She’s very bubbly. She’s the opposite of all things around her.’ I wouldn’t call myself bubbly but I guess I have my moments.” She worked on this project during the coronavirus pandemic, considering it a blissful distraction from these harsh times we’re living.

Previously tied to Marvel through her participation in the MCU as Darcy Lewis, this series also puts Kat on the map of DC Comics.

Following, the official The Sandman synopsis as given by Audible, as well as a disclaimer.

When The Sandman, also known as Lord Morpheus — the immortal king of dreams, stories and the imagination — is pulled from his realm and imprisoned on Earth by a nefarious cult, he languishes for decades before finally escaping. Once free, he must retrieve the three “tools” that will restore his power and help him to rebuild his dominion, which has deteriorated in his absence. As the multi-threaded story unspools, The Sandman descends into Hell to confront Lucifer, chases rogue nightmares who have escaped his realm, and crosses paths with an array of characters from DC comic books, ancient myths, and real-world history, including: Inmates of Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum, Doctor Destiny, the muse Calliope, the three Fates, William Shakespeare and many more
